[ Empathy links mean unfortunate things in situations like this. There's a flare of awful panic, which gradually distills into anxious worry, and then something like dread, over the course of about a half hour. ( it's hard to tell sometimes, the longer they stay muddled up together, whether the feelings are coming from nick or nate. easier, maybe, when nick wasn't prone to as many random bouts of panic, but tonight he just sits in bed, a little anxious and a little confused, until the message comes through.

So, this isn't me judging. I just thought I'd give you a heads up for what's coming. One of the names on your list? Max? Is Michael's brother.

[ A little paper bird flies into Nick's house, and circles every room until it finds him. It avoids giving the jewellery box it's carrying to Chester, despite the latter's best efforts. If Nick's lucky, he'll catch them in time to see the bird dancing out of Chester's grabbing arms and pecking the back of his head with an indignant beak.
The package gets delivered directly to Nick. Once its job is done, the bird explodes all over him in a shower of red and pink paper hearts.
Inside is an earring, with a slight dangle. The diamond is white, which is unusual for Nate's work, but Nick wears pale colours and pastels so much that it just seemed like a safe bet. The diamond is, of course, twistable.
There's a note alongside it that says: ]
Euphoria. Pure, unadulterated. Not a true high, just a shot of good feeling. It lasts about 20 mins, needs an hour to recharge.

( a short while later, nate gets a message. there's no message attached, just a photo of nick in bed. his head is tilted enough to centre the main attraction, the earring situated snug in nick's ear, and there are little paper hearts covering his shoulders, chest, on the pillow around his head like a crafty halo.

[ the mushrooms bring with them a kind of brevity that nick has been sorely missing lately. it's fun poking around with them, figuring out what they can do, how they can use them. not that it matters that much, but they're apparently expensive. nick starts talking about recreating them all, and recreating means trials and tests. at some point he ends up with spores in his face, it's not a problem.
this one though, this one is nice. nick is teetering somewhere between conscious and not, with a blissful lack of awareness that makes it perfectly okay to stretch out and sleep in the middle of the day without a care in the world.
chris's hand in his hair gets a reaction, but not much. it's more of a pleased hum without words, a soft sort of encouraging thing. nick's head tips into the touch and he leans, seeking more of the gentle contact. ]

[ it's--a complicated day, and one nick doesn't know how to talk about with anyone, really, much less kyle. it's just that it's such a weirdly specific situation. nick is hardly the first person to have had something awful to happen to him a year ago...but most of those people don't spend the better part of that year in a relationship with the other party.
so it's messy, and complicated, and nick doesn't really know what to do with any of this, but the text message makes him smile. and that's enough, for now. ]
