Neither. ( is the honest answer, but it's not a particularly helpful one. he squeezes oliver's hand though, sucks a breath in like he has more to say, and-

nick's exhale comes out shaky, words punctuated by the quiet flick of his thumb against the rim of the coffee cup in rapid succession. )

If you'd been put into a similar position, I'd have forgiven you. I'd have told you it wasn't your fault you were drugged and forced to act that way. The difference is he keeps pulling shit that puts him right back in the same situation. Just recently, he whipped someone on camera because of whatever else he got his sticky fingers into. It's one thing to wave a finger at the system and tell it to fuck off, it's another to consistently make choice which put you and everyone else he cares about at risk. This isn't a place where someone can do whatever they want to and just expect the repercussions to fall on their own shoulders. The episode with you and that girl made that quite clear. He knows that. But he selfishly keeps doing it.

I know why it happened. I don't know if that justifies what happened, but I know what got him there.

( it's a bigger issue than nick can really grapple with, how much blame can be placed on logan for the punishments being doled out. the forgiveness for that incident had to come from dick, not from him -- and nick is pretty sure that he's gotten it, or the last few weeks would have probably looked very different.

still, it's not like he doesn't get it. he's had this conversation too many times not to understand the concerns, even if he doesn't agree with them. )

I know why he went after guards that day and got that punishment. I--more or less know why he reacts the way he does. I'm not going to sit here and justify his actions, that's not my job. he ditches the coffee with a vague gesture, one that he wasn't paying enough attention to clearly, because the cup lands on the desk with a wobble and almost tips. but it stays upright and nick uses the opportunity to snag oliver's arm in both of his hand, squeezing tight. but he's deliberately not defensive, because every conversation like this devolves into a fight when nick inevitably feels his back in a corner and reacts, but he wants this to be different. )

I get, if you don't understand it. I really do, and I get that you don't like it, but he's...really fucking important to me. And I would really appreciate it if you didn't put me through the wringer for it. I've already done that and it fucking sucks.

( nick's cup doesn't quite fall, and oliver's reaching over with his own to shove it a bit more up onto the desk, to keep it from falling over. raises his own to his lips after to take another drink, before his mocha gets cold and disappointing. listens still. he knows better, than to push nick too hard. it won't get him anywhere, it won't resolve anything, it'll only piss them both off even more.

so he keeps his mouth shut. decides he'll deal with logan in his own way later, it's fine. )

( kisses pressed just below nick's ear, once oliver's moved the cup of coffee back to the desk and on the edge next to nick's. not close enough it'll fall. just close enough to make it easy to grab onto later. ) You know that, right? ( and logan is a liability. likely to off whenever he feels like it and cause damage. he wishes nick would have stuck with safer people. kyle's alright. he likes ragnor and nate. one out of four isn't the absolute worst. )

( it's not pressure, it's love, but sometimes it feels like it. the downside of having people who love you, care about you, is that there are people who love and care about you. and nick--well. he likes them possessive.

so it's a problem, but not one with any solution except to keep doing what he's been doing — pleading with them all to trust him, have faith that nick knows what he's doing with logan and just pray that it doesn't backfire. for now it seems like he's dodged the bullet though, and nick leans in a little, presses his cheek a bit harder against oliver's and finds both his hands. winds their fingers together and digs his thumbnails in lightly over the back of oliver's hands, just enough to leave faint half moon circles in his wake. )

You know I'd do the same for you, right? I know I'm... ( scrawny. avoidant. a raging pacifist, but- ) If someone hurt you, I'd tear them apart Oli.

( that nick would try. that those feelings of his are exactly why he should know how oliver feels about logan. they're both possessive in their own right. nick digs his fingers into his hand and oliver's turning his hand over, palm up in front of nick with his fingers wrapped tight around the other's own. )

( purposefully vague, purposefully leaving plenty options open for nick to pick and choose from. giving him the choice so it doesn't feel like oliver's pushing for it. )

( his legs spread a little more, giving nick room to turn around between them. he can always eventually figure out the off switch for nick's mark if he feels like it, so it's not like oliver actually gives a shit. nick's giving him enough leverage to make it worth it. )

with more space between his legs to move nick can twist more, lean in where oliver has leant back and press a kiss to his lips. and another for good measure, a little slower and lingering. stays there when he speaks again in a soft murmur. )

( the kiss is sweet, and oliver's tipping his head forward to press into it. gives a soft hum under his breath, then--slips his hand out of nick's on, so he can grab onto the back of his collar and pull it off over his head. does his best not to disturb nick's position during. )

( said with a lovely sweet smile, naturally, and he leans back only enough to let oliver tug off his shirt before he drops another quick peck on his cheek. and then he's off, rooting through the drawer next to the bed until he comes up with a few items.

(the positioning of the tattoo equipment just feet from his bed more or less explains why so many impulsive little designs appear on nick, but that's neither here nor there.)

he has to rearrange them a little to get comfortable — which mostly just involves knocking oliver's legs together to straddle his thighs instead, tossing down paper towel, a tattoo gun next to them that only looks like a good idea because it's not just a sewing needle and setting a bottle of ink down on the bedside table with an awful lot more care. very unprofessional--very unsanitary, but nick has been successfully circumventing that with magic for a while now.

nick's smile doesn't quite falter, but it fades a little when he plants his palm on oliver's chest, right about where he's thinking of putting a symbol. this doesn't actually help. knowing where oliver is, stamping his presence on his body, these things don't actually achieve much, but it's something. for now. he still wants to do it which matters more in the end. )

Always thought semi-permanent marks were a way more fun brand of friendship bracelets than just the bracelets themselves. Feels so disposable. You know?

( this is also how people end up with names tattooed on their bodies in embarrassing places and have to find someone to cover it up with something slightly less embarrassing, but who cares about those kinds of details. )

( he's flippant about the response, but that doesn't stop nick from distracting himself with idle thoughts of how cute that would be. they could weave little charms into them. maybe that's something to explore later, actually, a way of loading oliver up to the teeth with protective gear, until someone can't even think a bad thought about the guy without suffering the consequences.

but this is a good enough start. nick drifts a palm across his chest, grazes a thumb over his nipple while he thinks about placements, and he pinches lightly before he taps a spot roughly centre-left, more or less where a heart sits. it's a little cringe. nick doesn't really care. )

( like he's not already picking up the gun and dipping it carefully in the ink. it's not a professional machine by any means, a jerry-rigged handheld thing that runs on spelled batteries and with the only benefit that it runs a little faster than poking it by hand. they should have done this at the theatre, with actual equipment, this is only really supposed to be for when nick feels the need to tattoo stupid things on himself at two in the morning--but he likes the thought too much to suggest anything different. oliver, in his bed, with a mark that nick put on him. )

( he could make nick a friendship bracelet. fill it with enough curses and charms to keep people from fucking with him, william included. and logan. because fuck that guy in particular. he's got a few studs packed with protection charms that'd work well, but they're not--well-hidden. he'd have to offer first, ask nick if it's fine. spell them specifically to nick, his emotions. which is a whole other project for later that he can work on.

for now, he's--focusing on nick, on his fingers over oliver's chest. he bites into the inside of his cheek when fingers pinch his nipple, offers nick a smarmy grin as he drops down to lay on the mattress. pulls one of the pillows over to put it under his head. )

he's no artistic talent but something about the shapes of simple tattoos makes sense to him. he traces the idea out faintly with his fingernail, a little sun-moon thing that's not especially complex, with lines that are easy to drip-feed spells into, too. he gives the machine a little buzz — it's slow, in a way that probably translates into painful — and raises his eyebrow. )

( nick shifts forward and oliver gives a soft sigh, tipping his head back against the pillow he's claimed but it--doesn't get more of a response than that. they've only just started, after all. plenty of time for that later. )

( the way nick says it, it might as well be the highest of compliments. he runs a hand over oliver's chest again, smoothing over the skin lightly before he uses one to hold the spot taut. the other lifts to the same spot, guides the gun and needle to the place where he can picture a simple little design perfectly.

nick doesn't focus well on a lot of things, but he's focusing on this. he's careful when the buzzing gun comes into contact with oliver's skin, and his eyes don't even move from his chest when he hears the compliment. but one side of his mouth quirks up, bright, because he definitely heard it. )

( it does hurt. more than an actual tattoo gun, surprisingly more than just a plain needle probably because it's just fast enough to semi-feel like an actual gun but slow enough that it still feels just. like a needle being continiously jabbed into his skin, instead of the scratchy sensation a gun would have. he keeps his chest still as possible, taking small breaths instead of deeper ones.

keeps his eyes on nick's as he focuses. )

that doesn't stop him from humming out a soft affirmation though, and when he can't hold it any longer his eyes ever so briefly dart up to oliver's and back down again. just for a second, just enough to make eye contact and lose it again just as quickly. )
