pierce has been going through a lot of... let's call it, reflecting over past events and the decisions he has made regarding them and he honestly cannot say why he didn't just fucking drop everything and went to nick the moment he heard that matty didn't make it.

undoubtedly, he was caught up in something important, but it all feels so meaningless and trifle now. )

What prompted you to finally try it out?

[ it's that simple and it's not, but there are so few good things that have happened lately that nick takes the moment to smother a smile into pierce's chest at the thought. the truth is closer to nick riding the high of trying new things and finally jumping in, but he doesn't know how to explain that without explaining the sobriety, and he can't explain the sobriety without explaining everything--

fuck. pierce being here is going to complicate things, again. ]

I like, study and shit now. I've been learning different magic, summoning, portals, they're spells from different worlds but we figured out how to make them work for me.

( color him impressed though. he never thought a day would come when nick of all people would be telling him that he's actually studying. )

Shit. ( placing his hands on his shoulders, pierce pulls him back to look down at his face. ) Are you really O'Broin? ( he presses his palm over his forehead, pretending to check his temperature. ) You didn't fuckin' get bodysnatched, did you?

[ it's a wasted effort but nick corrects him anyway. at least it tells him that pierce has run into oliver already, and nick will--decide how he feels about the chatter later. things with oli are already fragile, he doesn't want to blow it up with another knee jerk reaction.

he can't be annoyed for long anyway, pierce's reaction just makes him laugh, and he squirms a little but doesn't let him go, just tips his head into the touch instead. ]

I'm on a journey of self-betterment okay? There's a lot of time to kill around here. And it was Ragnor. One of the warlocks.

( in one ear, out the other. 💁‍♂️ )

Self-betterment? ( amusement lights up his voice and lures out that inexplicably sweet cadence that pierce strickland has charmed one too many with. his grin brings out his dimples as he pinches nick's cheek. ) Does that include exercising, mate? Because if it does, then you're coming with me on my runs.

( enough with the small talk though. he has more urgent matters to discuss with him. taking hold of his forearms, pierce breaks the lock nick has around his waist, instead pulling him towards the living room by the wrist. they can't just stand there all day. )

We gotta chat, Nick. ( he sits him right down on the couch. )

Fuck that, I'm not running anywhere, you missed that phase.

[ he's happy enough to just follow along though, mostly because pierce trades out nick's latched on grip for holding his wrist and that's an acceptable trade off to him. except pierce says we gotta chat, and nothing good has ever followed someone saying that to nick.

he follows still, sits still, but the easy smile on his face has frozen in place, and he eyes pierce carefully as he tugs a leg up into the couch, pulls it up to his chest. ]

but for now, they need to talk about what's been going on with oli and his asshole dominant. instead of sitting next to him, pierce stays standing, his hands slipping into the pockets of his black sweatpants. )

Oli's Dominant. ( whatever smile disappears from his demeanor as he lowers his gaze down to nick coolly. ) Tell me what he's done, Nick.

[ nick's expression doesn't slip at all, which might not be a red flag for anyone else, but pierce has known him too long. nick's eyes flick from the door, back up to pierce, and his teeth dig into the inside of his cheek for a moment before he shrugs. ]

There's nothing to tell, leave it alone.

( nice try, mate. but they both know that pierce would not be coming to him if he could get the information he needed from oli.

there is no out for nick. not this time. )

I'm getting a little tired of all the secrecy here. You know as well as I do how this song and dance is gonna play out, Nick, so let's just fast forward to the part where you tell me the truth before I lose my fuckin' shit, find this motherfucker and pummel the answers out of him myself. Does that sound reasonable? ( oli, in fact, has told him enough for pierce to readily decimate that shitstain, but either he's trying to respect nick's privacy or he actually doesn't know the full extent of what happened, he hasn't divulged the details of what his dominant did to nick. so please help him fill in the gap. )

So, I'll ask you again. What did he do?

[ the thing is, everything that nick has done for the last month has been to keep other people out of it--to keep them safe, as much as nick can, but of course pierce arriving would blow that all up.

his eyes slide to the door again — maybe he should just leave, there really doesn't seem to be any other out — but he shifts uncomfortably in the seat, sliding back into the couch and shrinking down but staying put. for the minute, at least. ]

Please don't get involved. Please, it's not just--it's complicated, there's a lot— I can't tell you what's happening, there's just a lot, and if I talk before things-- I can't.

( he can run if he wants, but nick should be aware by now that running away from pierce leads to disastrous consequences. )

The thing is, I'm already involved. He's Oli's Dominant. Do I need to repeat that? Oliver is contracted to him. And apparently, Oli can't leave him because you're involved. So, let's work out the math here. Two of my best fuckin' friends have been roped in by this steaming pile of decaying horseshit and I'm supposed to refrain from going after him when no one is giving me a good enough reason not to. ( actually, that's a straight up lie. oli already told him his plan and he is more than happy to oblige, but being honest with nick isn't gonna get him to spill, so 💁‍♂️ )

It isn't adding up right, is it, Nicholas? ( he leans down as he braces his arms on either side of nick's head. his smile denotes his impatience, a sharp edge to its corners. ) Tell me what's going on. ( he meets his eyes with his own deliberately. ) I'm not some fuckin' run of the mill friend you have here. We've known each other for far too long for you to start treating me like one.

[ nick is easily intimidated, that's not exactly a new revelation, but these days it's definitely worse. pierce braces his arms and nick slouches down in response, pushes back into the cushions with as much give as they have. it's not enough, he can't lie under these conditions, not to pierce. he needs space, and not to feel like a caged animal--and he needs less to lie about.

nick swallows, and tries to do an impression of a person not freaking out when he clears his throat, because if there's anything that will just escalate the situation, it'll be if he starts fucking crying. ]

I know that, I fucking know Oli's stuck in a contract with him, you think I don't? [ it's a bad impression of a person not freaking out, nick can hear the strain in his voice already. ] Pierce, please. It's not good, okay? It's not, but I can't talk about it and you have to leave it alone. I'm handling it.

( one of the many downsides to being close to pierce strickland is that his near photographic memory and keen perception has granted him the highly inconvenient ability to learn, file away and register every minutiae detail of his best friends like the back of his hand.

also nick is just an incredibly bad actor and anyone who's known him for more than two seconds can tell that he's trying very hard not to cry. )

Fuckin' hell, O'Broin. ( his tone is scathing as he leans closer to him, further diminishing his space. a spark of something dangerous ignites behind his hazel hues — a vicious predator cornering its prey, merciless in both his intent and void of any compassion. ) If you say you can't talk to me about it one more time, I swear I'm going to find him and rip his spine straight out of his useless fuckin' body right now. Spill.

[ he might have pushed back, on a better month. or if nick didn't already feel so stretched thin, or if he wasn't quite so close, quite so sharp. but pierce is taking no prisoners and nick has been on the verge of this for a while now.

something about the tone of pierce voice does it. it's harsh, in a way that people aren't with nick at all any more, and he's aware, vaguely, that he's already started crying but nick ignores it. ]

( he could have reeled back at anytime. stepped back and considered nick's feelings for once. but that has never been how pierce functioned. he manipulates, deceives, attacks and takes what he wants before his conscience sets in (if it sets in at all).

it's only when nick cracks and starts to talk that the tautness in his jaw eases and his expression softens. )

[ the problem is that there's a lot built up, too much for nick to just stamp back down. he sounds miserable and he knows it, but he just scowls at the blurred approximation of pierce's face. ]

What's the bit that's going to make you more mad, the part where I begged him not to tie me up and he kept pushing until I said yes, or the bit where I got off anyway? Is that what you want to hear? I told you to fucking leave it.

[ he's aiming for angry, he wants to sound pissed, but it catches in his throat and nick just sounds as sad and scared as he's been since this whole thing started. ]

he got the confirmation he wanted from him. does he feel bad that it took driving nick to freaking tears? yes. does he regret doing it though? no. )

I can't do that. ( he finally pushes away, giving him his space back. taking a seat next to him, pierce rakes his fingers through his hair as he looks at him solemnly. he doesn't say anything for a moment before he angles his head at him slightly. ) He hurt you, Nick. He pressured you into doing something you didn't want to do and he has apparently made you feel like it's your fault.

( and it's taking every bit of self-restraint in him not to immediately leave this apartment, find that fucker and drag his face across the ground to the depths of hell and back. he just might because he doesn't have oli's aptitude for patience, especially not after what he just heard. )

It isn't your fault, Nick. ( there is no bite to his words. it's simply firm and direct. ) You want to know which bit makes me the maddest, right? It's that. The fact that he made you fucking feel that way. And that I wasn't here to stop it from happening.

[ pierce finally moves back and nick sucks in a breath like he's been holding it, and it only narrowly avoids becoming a gasping sort of sob because he's so good at stamping that down. he scrubs the back of his hand under his eyes, angry swipes that don't really clear anything up at all, and resolutely doesn't look at pierce when he settles next to him. ]

I was here for a year before any of you showed up, Pierce. I figured out how to handle shit on my own. [ he's not mad at them for not being there, not really, because that wouldn't be fair. it's just sometimes when he's feeling especially awful, even unfair thoughts manage to creep their way in. ] i know you think you're going to bulldoze in and fix this whole mess, but you can't. You need to back off and let me handle it.

[ he's just going to continue ignoring the fact that his voice wobbles too hard for the words to bite, that his chest is still shuddering because he is very much still crying, even if nick is resolutely pretending that it's not happening. ]

( look at him trying to be assertive all the while blubbering away. )

But we're here now. That means you don't have to handle shit on your own.

( he inhales slowly before letting the breath out. ) I know I haven't been the greatest friend, but did a year in this place make you lose your trust in me? If I was gonna make a big fuckin' mess out of everything, then I would have done it already.

( turning towards him, pierce props his arm on top of the couch as he reaches out with his hand to brush some of the tears away from nick's right eye. )

And if you're gonna cry, then stop trying to hold it in. Just let it all out, mate.

[ he's a mess of contradictions, flinching at the touch even as he turns his cheek towards it, scowling even as he reaches up and presses the hand into his face harder. he wants to be angry, is the thing. nick wants to be angry at william--at pierce--at the whole goddamn city, but he isn't.

nick doesn't get angry, there's no point. there's nowhere for that anger to go, so he's just really fucking sad instead. ]

I don't want to fucking cry, I want to get on with my shit without people forcing shit out of me. [ he doesn't let go, nick holds his hand tight and keeps that hand flush against his face, but nick closes his eyes. it's a little easier to ignore the tears like that, if he can't see at all. ] I don't want to talk about it.

( pierce couldn't tell him if it is better to be angry or to be sad. there really isn't a satisfactory answer available, at least none that he has found. most of his life has been spent battling between a sense of defiance and surrender, yet he is no closer to striking a balance between the two now than he did when he was younger.

he doesn't draw his hand away, letting nick press his face against the palm of it. his tears feel hot against his skin. )

I won't make you talk about it anymore. ( he got everything he needed. ) You can punch me if that'll make you feel better.

[ nick actually laughs at that, and it's a wet, helpless sort of a sound but it's still a laugh. he's just--tired, of everything that's going on, and keeping so much to himself, and he's tired of having fights with his friends. but pierce says they can stop talking about it, so nick jumps on that. ]

You know, it's my birthday next week. [ he twists his head a little, just so he can drop something like a kiss against pierce's palm ] Twenty-one, finally.

( consider: not keeping so much to himself and actually relying on his bffs more, especially now that they're all here!!! )

Twenty-one, huh? ( he... stifles the grimace threatening to emerge. that was not a good year. nope. ) Aren't you growing up fast? ( a light tease as he ruffles his hair. ) So, what do you want for your birthday? I'll make it happen.

[ his nose wrinkles at the hair mussing, but nick is still smiling despite his best efforts to look annoyed at the gesture. there's even an ineffective eye roll, and nick sweeps both his hands quickly over his face before he twists in his seat, leaning right over until he can lean into pierce. ]

I don't want anything, I don't need anything. You have to come to my thing though, Oli's doing something. Apparently there's going to be an orgy.

[ you know. naturally. ]

( his smile freezes in place at the mention of a thing.

it's... not going to be a small one between the four of them if there's gonna be an orgy involved, is it? )

Oh. ( he doesn't think it's a good idea for him to attend a party right now. it's bound to end bad with him there. but he did just make him cry. there's a limit to how much of a jerk he can be with his friends. ) I'll swing by for a bit then. ( he won't make any promises for how long he'll actually stay. )
